If you have ever looked at a stock quote on the Internet, chances are you have used a system that Hans Jespersen had a hand in creating. For the past 20 years, Hans has been working with infrastructure hardware and software at pioneering Silicon Valley companies including Sun Microsystems, Yahoo, eBay, and TIBCO Software. The systems that Hans has been designing, implementing, and evangelizing are often very large scale distributed systems based on leading edge technologies. Hans is a subject matter expert in Enterprise Architecture and Integration, Enterprise Search, and more specifically the emergence of Web Services standards, Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), and Event Driven Architecture (EDA)

Presentation: "Rise of the Appliances: How purpose built hardware is enabling the next generation of massive scale infrastructure"
Time: Thursday 16:50 - 17:50
Abstract: This presentation examines key converging ideas and technologies leading to extremely high performance middleware and application infrastructure. Emphasis is given to the use of existing off the shelf hardware such as GPUs, Network Processors, and FPGAs to accelerate performance and increase efficiency. The concrete use cases of a nuclear radiation sensor network and an online gambling website are outlined as examples.
