Presentation: "AppWatch - a big data application monitoring system for eBay"

Abstract: eBay's Platform Services team will present an overview of AppWatch - a large scale application and infrastructure monitoring system developed at eBay. The presentation will focus on the key architectural aspects of AppWatch including central collection of the structured application log records and metrics, OLAP processing of the collected data, event stream processing system for generating real-time health indicators, and distributed metric storage system for serving analytical queries against historic data.

Bhaven Avalani, eBay

 Bhaven  Avalani Bhaven leads the Platform Services group at eBay. Platform Services pioneers the SAAS vision at eBay with focus on Monitoring, Storage, Media, Messaging, Crawling and Advertising Services.  Prior to Platform Services, Bhaven lead the SOA Platform and API Developer Platform at eBay.  

Bhaven’s key areas of research are Big Data Storage and Analytics in Monitoring space. The Monitoring platform at eBay provides real-time and batch analytics and intelligence for 200 terabytes of data per day. This platform is key to Business and Operational Intelligence at eBay.

Prior to eBay, Bhaven has worked in several large scale distributed services initiatives at Informix, Quintus and Adobe. Bhaven has Masters in Computer Science from Syracuse University and Bachelors in Computer Science from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

Yuri Finklestein, eBay

 Yuri  Finklestein Yuri is the lead architect of the Platform Services group at eBay. He works on broad set of technology areas including application/infrastructure monitoring and analytics, storage services and data management.  Yuri’s key areas of interest include big data analytics, NoSql databases, and distributed computing.

Before eBay, Yuri worked on systems management and  distributed computing at several valley startups as well as on real-time messaging at Tibco Finance/Reuters.
