Track: Containers in Practice

Location:

Day of week:

The arrival of Docker little more than two years ago has transformed the use of containers across the industry. They're finding their way into new cloud services, new continuous integration and DevOps processes, and have become a popular way to test and deploy applications. This track will mix stories from service providers and ecosystem developers with those from end users who have made containers part of their everyday toolkit.

CTO @Joyent

The mainstreaming of containerization and microservices is raising a critical question of both developers and operators alike: how do we debug all this? Debugging has often been the most challenging and misunderstood aspect of application development and delivery, but that challenge grows ever more complex with modern, composed applications: while distributed systems can be highly resilient to certain kinds of failure, they’re exposed to new failure modes. In this talk, we will describe the...

SRE & Postmodern Sysadmin @Yelp

There are plenty of great technologies out there for building container-based deployment systems, but how do you put all the pieces together in a holistic way? Yelp's internal platform as a service (PaaSTA) takes a holistic view for taking services from an idea and git repo, to monitored in production. This technical talk will include lots of details on how to tie Mesos, Docker, SmartStack, Haproxy, Git, and Sensu all together into a coherent system that developers can use to ship their code...

by Ben Corrie
Creator of Project Bonneville and JVM internals expert @VMWare

The Container vs VM debate has been a pertinent question for years, but with the recent popularity of Docker, many have been keenly anticipating VMware's response. Their CEO's early claim was that Containers and VMs are "better together", but what exactly does that mean? Should we run containers in VMs, instead of VMs or even as VMs? In answer to this, Ben Corrie has spent the last year researching the most efficient way to run Containers directly on VMware's hypervisor and recently...

by Bridget Kromhout
Principal Technologist for Cloud Foundry @Pivotal

What is your platform? Everyone has one, whether it’s Docker wrapped in config management wrapped in thousand-line fabfiles, bespoke artisanal hand-crafted shell scripts… or both! What promises can your platform make and keep? What contract does your platform provide to your applications? Does your platform deliver value rapidly, reliably, at scale... or has it become a burden unto itself? Perhaps a bit of both?

Continuous delivery has gone from an aspirational nice-to-have...

At Netflix, we place a strong emphasis on speed of innovation. As our systems scale to meet business growth, our microservices based environment is becoming polyglot and our engineering teams are getting more diverse. In this talk, we will look at the role of containers in simplifying and increasing the reliability of the process of releasing and operating our software.
