Presentation: Panel: Ethics in Software Engineering

Ayana Miller is an experienced technical advisor on privacy and data protection.

She has built and managed in-house privacy programs at Facebook, Snapchat, and Pinterest. Prior to working in Silicon Valley, Ayana worked in Washington, D.C. at the United States Federal Trade Commission and MITRE, a federally funded research and development center. With a focus on practical privacy practices in an era of social media sharing, she has been a speaker at marketing and tech conferences across the United States.

Ayana holds a master’s degree in public policy and management from Carnegie Mellon University and has multiple privacy certifications through the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), where she also served as an advisory member of the publishing board. 

Bruce DeBruhl is an Assistant Professor at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the Computer Science and Software Engineering Department. He is also affiliated with the Computer Engineering Program. Bruce's educational goal is to develop opportunities for diverse students to get hands on experience with security and privacy. Bruce's research interests include wireless security, cyber-physical security, location privacy, and automotive security. Bruce received his PhD and MS degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University Silicon Valley, under the guidance of Patrick Tague, and his BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Kettering University.

Theo founded Circonus in 2010, and continues to be its principal architect. After earning undergraduate and graduate degrees from Johns Hopkins University in computer science with a focus on graphics and randomized algorithms in distributed systems, he went on to research resource allocation techniques in distributed systems during four years of post-graduate work. A widely respected industry thought leader, Theo is the author of Scalable Internet Architectures (Sams), has contributed to several other published works, and is a frequent speaker at worldwide IT conferences. Theo is a computer scientist in every respect. Theo is a member of the IEEE and a distinguished member of the ACM. He serves on the editorial board of the ACM's Queue Magazine and ACM's Practitioner Board.

Megan Cristina is the Chief Privacy Officer at Slack, where over the last three years, she built the privacy and data governance program from the ground up. Megan and her team are responsible for providing privacy and policy guidance to all of Slack, enabling both Slack and Slack’s customers to comply with global privacy laws and regulations. Her experience spans a variety of privacy, policy, trust and safety roles.  Prior to joining Slack, Megan was Director of Trust and Safety at Twitter, and prior to that, Senior Director of Ad Policy, Trust and Safety at Yahoo!. In both of these roles, her teams were responsible for developing, implementing and communicating global policies, as well as ensuring compliance. Her teams were also responsible for advising product teams on features and policies that support business objectives while also creating a safe and trusted experience.
