Presentation: Quora's Approach To Moving Fast Sustainably
Key Takeaways
- Mental frameworks to enable trade-offs between short-term and long-term development speed.
- Ways to align developers with these frameworks and build a culture of moving fast.
- Some concrete processes/systems which work (and some which don't).
- In particular, Quora's unique tools/systems to move fast with a high-quality codebase.
Abstract
Startups must move fast to stay ahead. It is easy to move fast in the short term and collect product/technical debt to end up with a product, codebase and systems that completely paralyze the forward development in the long term. It is also easy to set things up to move fast in the long term (e.g through high code quality) but bear significant overhead and slow downs in the short term. In this talk, I'd talk about the mental frameworks, processes and tools that allow Quora to strike a good balance and move fast sustainably, both in the short-term and in the long-term.
