What Makes a Great API?
What Makes a Great API?
Location:
Bayview A/B
Time:
Monday, 10:30am - 11:20am
Abstract:
Although there are now thousands of web APIs available not all APIs are created equal. What is it that makes a good API into a great API? How do you get developers to love your API?
This talk will show how it's done based on real-world experience with thousands of APIs at ProgrammableWeb and API Science. Building a world class API is harder than it looks (hint: being RESTful is not enough). From technical questions about protocols and data formats, to security models, developer experience (DX), and more. This session will be a deep-dive on helping you build better APIs and platforms.
John Musser is CEO of API Science and previously founded ProgrammableWeb, the leading online resource on open APIs. John is an industry expert on APIs, quoted in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Forbes, and Wired, and speaking at conferences including SXSW, Dreamforce, and Web 2.0. He also consults on API strategy and trends with clients including Google, Microsoft, and Salesforce. During his 20-year career he has shipped six award-winning software products in three industries working with companies including Electronic Arts, Credit Suisse, MTV and Bell Labs. He has taught at Columbia University and the University of Washington.
