How a Small Team Scales Instagram
How a Small Team Scales Instagram
Location:
Grand Ballroom A
Time:
Monday, 4:05pm - 4:55pm
Abstract:
Instagram's infrastructure scaled to 30 million active users with a team of two infra engineers, and 150 million active users with a team of 10. Now that we have a chance to take a (quick) breath, we'll reflect on the architecture the service has evolved through in the last three years.
Mike Krieger, technical co-founder of Instagram, will present the session, and will unwrap Instagram's best and worst infrastructure decisions. We'll also break down how we build and deploy services that have let us scale to ever-growing demand and continue to add capabilities without slowing down our team.
Mike (@mikeyk) graduated from Stanford University where he studied Symbolic Systems with a focus in Human-Computer Interaction. During his undergrad, he interned at Microsoft's PowerPoint team as a PM and at Foxmarks (now Xmarks) as a software developer. He wrote his Master's thesis on how user interfaces can better support collaboration on a large scale. After graduating, he worked at Meebo for a year and a half as a user experience designer and as a front-end engineer before joining the Instagram team doing design & development.
