Continuous Delivery means being able to release software on demand at the push of a button. This track explores the technical and cultural elements that enable continuous delivery, using examples from large-scale systems. We'll also look at the consequences of continuous delivery - how it enables rapid learning through techniques such as multivariate testing, and how it changes the way product development works.

Growing from the Few to the Many: Scaling the Operations Organization at Facebook

Billions of interactions take place on Facebook every day -- people connect with each other, share photos and other content, discover new things, and more. Facebook has built out a massive, global infrastructure to enable all this activity, and when problems arise in the operation of that infrastructure, we need to react quickly to minimize any potential disruption for the more than 1 billion people who rely on Facebook in all these ways.

In this talk, I will describe the ways our operations organization works to maintain an infrastructure that is both highly reliable and highly scalable, focusing specifically on some of the challenges we've faced and the lessons we've learned. Some of the topics will include how we make prioritization calls and manage technical debt; how our organizational structures have evolved over time; and how we handle incident management.

The web provides an unprecedented opportunity to accelerate innovation by evaluating ideas quickly and accurately using controlled experiments (e.g., A/B tests and their generalizations).

From front-end user-interface changes to backend algorithms, online controlled experiments are now utilized to make data-driven decisions at Amazon, eBay, Facebook, Google, Intuit, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Netflix, Yahoo, Zynga, and at many other companies. While the theory of a controlled experiment is simple, running online controlled experiments at scale—hundreds of concurrent experiments on a given day at Bing—has taught us many lessons.

You will learn about controlled experiments through an introduction and real examples. We will share key insights, cultural challenges, scaling challenges, and humbling statistics.

Adopting Continuous Delivery: Adjusting your Architecture

This talk will focus on the architecture of your application. How do you design a system you intend to rapidly deploy? How do you avoid common pitfalls or anti-patterns, which will hinder your ability to deliver? How do you refactor your existing code base to suit rapid delivery? We will address patterns such as micro-services and evolutionary architecture, which can speed up your delivery.

We'll also look at how to tackle the dreaded ball-of-mud, that may be currently holding you back, without re-writing your entire architecture.
